How I can help

Every project is different and requires a tailored approach, but most fall somewhere within one of these three areas. Pick the closest one to what you’re looking for and let me know how I can help.

  • Leadership and advisory

A senior technical voice for your team or board: choosing the right technology, testing its limits, and turning it into a plan with a practical, measurable benefit.

    Discuss advisory
  • Technical consulting

Motion capture, virtual production, volumetric capture, XR and ground truth validation. From scoping and system design through to installation and commissioning.

    Discuss a project
  • AD / TD and production

On set, I help navigate the technical and creative vocabulary between departments, anticipate issues before they cost time, and keep the energy alive so the day keeps moving.

Training and public speaking

Underpinning all three roles, I train teams across technologies, workflows, processes, and soft skills. I also speak on the ethical use of AI, VR as a force for good, and solving technical problems creatively.

Let’s chat

About

Ashley Keeler smiling in an orange trucker cap, with the New York skyline behind

I’m a technical consultant. For nearly two decades I’ve worked across film, games, health, aerospace, automotive and construction, looking for ways to use technology to make each of them a little lighter on its feet.

We are facing global challenges that can only be overcome by working together, levelling the playing field, and proving that innovation and sustainability belong together.

I advocate for virtual production, XR and co-presence as ways to cut carbon emissions. I’ve delivered training around the world, and I speak on the ethical use of AI, on VR as a force for good, and on solving technical problems with creative solutions.

What I do now

Target3D
Co-founder and CTO. One of the UK's leading motion capture and tracking technology specialists, working across performance capture, virtual production and volumetric capture.
StudioT3D
Head of Studio. An advanced media production facility in London and Gateshead delivering performance capture, virtual production and volumetric capture.
DriveFlow AI
Board member. A performance intelligence platform that synchronises cognitive, physiological and vehicle telemetry in real time for elite motorsport.
Root & Branch
Commercial Partner. A digital sustainability company helping organisations measure and reduce the carbon footprint of their digital products.
Tools
Browser tools I have built, such as a 3D camera layout planner. Open the tools.
More on my current roles

At Target3D, the team and I work as a technology consultancy. We design and sell 3D systems end to end and train the people who run them. Depending on the project I wear the consultant, assistant director, technical director or producer hat.

At StudioT3D I run studio services from London and Gateshead. On Dune: Awakening I was head of studio, working with director Beth Park to turn creative requirements into something the technical team could build. On Norse: Oath of Blood I worked with the commercial lead from quote through to delivery, keeping scope, budget and deadline in step.

Much of the rest is research and education: installing systems for labs and universities, training the operators, and tuning accuracy and latency so the data can be trusted. I also sit on the board of DriveFlow AI, which builds performance intelligence for motorsport, and as Commercial Partner at Root & Branch I help with its work on digital sustainability.

Directing

Directing in the volume. Calibration, headsets, cast and crew all pointing the same way.
Directing a capture shoot. Running a motion capture shoot.
Directing performance capture. Keeping the technical side out of the performer’s way.
Assistant directing on Norse. The clipboard is more important than it looks.

R&D

Wind tunnel, Bristol. Validating motion capture data for foldable aircraft wings.
The willing test subject. Wearing the kit is the quickest way to find out what it is like to use.
Rigging cameras. Mounting mocap cameras on a motorised truss.
Glove fitting. Small details decide whether finger tracking works.
Glove tests. Manus and Stretchsense against ones I designed.
More testing. Always the willing victim.
Photogrammetry. Testing scanning rigs, with me as the subject again.
T-pose empathy. Everyone calibrates, including me.
Aston Martin. Simulation work with the team.
Finger tracking tests. Putting the gloves through real playing.

Event speaker

Talking at Develop. Motion capture and AI in games.
On a panel. One of many sessions on virtual production and mocap.
UKIE panel. Talking about technology in the games industry.
Optical mocap. Explaining how it works to people who will run it.

Shoots

Dune: Awakening. As head of studio I translated the director’s requirements for the technical team.
The King’s Man. A stage shoot for stunt visualisation.
Norse: Oath of Blood. A lot of people, a lot of cameras, one schedule.
Studio Drift. Working on Murmuring Minds at LUMA Arles.

Training

Teaching virtual production. Training at most UK universities and across Europe, Australia and America.
Training. The aim is for the team to own the system, not depend on me.

And the rest

The team at the capture studio. Performance capture is always a group effort.
Target3D, early days. With fellow directors.
WorldViz. Demoing immersive VR at a trade show.

A career across sectors

The same habit runs through all of it: find where precision technology can remove waste, error or delay.

Film, TV, Games & MusicAnt-Man, ABBA Voyage, Dune: Awakening, Björk: Ovule

Digital coordinator at Luma Pictures on Ant-Man, Avengers: Age of Ultron, The Divergent Series: Insurgent and The Last Witch Hunter. Motion capture technician at NVIZ on The King's Man, camera and performer tracking on the two animated films in ABBA Voyage, made by Shynola with Nexus, and motion capture supervisor on Björk: Ovule and Britannia VR. Target3D also shot ENDLESS by Halina Rice with 4D Gaussian splat technology.

Studio director at StudioT3D on Dune: Awakening and Norse: Oath of Blood, and motion capture consultant on Assassin's Creed III: Liberation.

Writer and director of the short films Prism Break and Alone Ranger, and sound designer on Daniel Avery music videos.

Health & ResearchUCL BodyLab, Cerca Magnetics

Motion capture and tracking for hospitals and medical research teams, including UCL's BodyLab and mobile brain scanning with Cerca Magnetics.

Live & Location BasedStranger Things: The First Shadow, Clays, Arcade Arena

Stranger Things: The First Shadow (West End and Broadway) with 59 Productions, original concept design for the Clays clay-shooting tracking system, and consulting on large-scale tracking for Little Lion Entertainment's Arcade Arena.

Aerospace & AutomotiveAirbus, Lúnasa Space, McLaren F1, Williams F1

Motion capture validation of folding wing concepts in a University of Bristol wind tunnel, space docking trajectory validation for Lúnasa Space, and feedback loops for robotics and aerospace research.

Simulation work with McLaren F1, wind tunnel testing with Williams F1, simulation work with Aston Martin, autonomous vehicle research at Cambridge University, and ergonomics validation across VW, Škoda and Citroën Peugeot.

Construction & DesignAR validation, additive manufacturing

Validating AR construction tools to catch mistakes on screen rather than in poured concrete, and refining additive manufacturing processes to cut waste at source.
